No. 18 UC Davis falls twice at Stanford

Jan. 31, 2015

STANFORD, Calif. - Four UC Davis players totaled two goals each in a pair of losses during the first day of action at the Stanford Invitational women's water polo tournament Saturday at Avery Aquatic Center. The 18th-ranked Aggies lost to the top-ranked host Cardinal by a 16-4 final, then dropped a 15-6 decision to No. 7 San Jose State in the mid-afternoon game.

UC Davis moves to 1-3 for the year.

In Saturday's morning contest, Carla Tocchini, Keelia Houston, Lauren Emge and Bryn Lutz each scored one goal in a 16-4 loss to the top-ranked Cardinal. UC Davis fell behind by a 6-0 margin in the opening quarter before Houston drew a five-meter foul and hit her own penalty shot to put the Aggies on the board. Tocchini later brought the score to its halftime state of 8-2 thanks to a successful 6-on-5 conversion with just under three minutes remaining in the second.

Lutz scored early in the fourth quarter and Emge added hers in the final minute, but Stanford had stretched its edge to as much as 15-2 by the end of the third frame.

Then in Saturday's nightcap, sophomore Hannah Harvey netted two goals while Houston, Lutz, Tocchini and junior Allyson Hansen each added one. The Aggies surrendered four unanswered before Lutz and Houston halved the lead to 4-2 late in the first quarter. Harvey's first goal, on a power-play opportunity, brought UC Davis to within one just 70 seconds into the second.

Tocchini and Hansen also scored in that second stanza to keep the Aggies within a two-goal deficit, but in similar fashion in the loss to Stanford, San Jose State pulled away in the third with a six-goal outburst.

UC Davis resumes play at the Stanford Invite on Sunday with an 8 a.m. game against UC Irvine. The Aggies will then take on their B bracket counterpart that afternoon.
