Jan. 17, 2015 SAN JOSE, Calif. - Freshman Greta Kohlmoos' third goal of the game lifted 18th-ranked UC Davis to a 7-6 win over the Brazil Senior National Team, completing a Day 2 split at the LouStrong Memorial women's water polo tournament at San Jose State Saturday. The Aggies previously fell to No. 4 California by a 15-4 final in their early-afternoon contest.
UC Davis opens its season at 0-1, as the contest against Brazil does not officially count toward NCAA records.
Kohlmoos scored at the midpoint of the first quarter, at just under two minutes in the third, then the game-winner at the 4:51 mark of the fourth for her hat trick. Sophomore Bryn Lutz netted a pair of goals for the Aggies, breaking the scoreless tie at 6:12 in the first then converting an extra-player situation to extend her team's lead to 4-2 with 3:26 left in the first half. UC Davis held a 4-3 edge at the break, with Brazil's Marina Zablith goal halving the lead with six ticks left before halftime.
Brazil managed to tie the contest on two occasions in the third quarter but goals by Allyson Hansen and Kohlmoos kept the Aggies up by one. Melanie Dias equalized yet again with her power-play goal at the 5:13 mark in the fourth, only to have Kohlmoos score the final go-ahead after the ensuing restart.
Sophomore goalie Olivia Husted stopped 13 shots in front of the UC Davis cage.
Brazil ranked 14th in the FINA women's world rankings last summer, thanks mostly to place-winners in the two previous World League standings.
Six different players scored two goals each for the Golden Bears, which held a 4-0 lead over UC Davis midway through the first quarter and a 9-1 edge at halftime. Senior Keelia Houston, the junior Hansen, sophomore Hannah Harvey and freshman Jill Bushman each netted goals for the Aggies while goalies Jillian Wilding and Haley Cameron combined for seven stops.
Houston put UC Davis on the board with the final possession of the first quarter, soon after Carla Carrega extended Cal's lead to 5-0 on a penalty shot. Bushman converted a 6-on-5 chance a minute into the third quarter while Hansen also had a power-play goal with two minutes left, the latter of which set the board to 11-3. Harvey scored the fourth UC Davis goal with 5:06 left in the fourth.
The Aggies, who did not play in Friday's portion of the tourney, continue action at the LouStrong Memorial with games against the People's Republic of China and former Western Water Polo Association leaguemate Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday.
