Jan. 12, 2015 DAVIS, Calif. - Junior attacker Sammi Murphy scored two goals while goalkeepers Jillian Wilding and Olivia Husted each tallied five saves, highlighting UC Davis in a women's water polo exhibition game with the People's Republic of China Monday afternoon. China, the 2013 World League champions and ranked No. 2 in the FINA rankings last summer, won the game by a 16-9 final.
Murphy hit goals in the first and fourth quarters to pace the Aggies offensively. Senior Elsie Fullerton and junior Allyson Hansen each posted power-play goals for UC Davis, while Paige Virgil, Jill Bushman, Greta Kohlmoos, Hannah Harvey and Bryn Lutz netted a goal apiece on even-strength situations.
Zhang Cong led the Chinese squad with four goals while Sun Yujun and Zhao Zihan each hit three. Goalkeeper Peng Ling stepped in for eight saves in her second-half relief stint, including one against a five-meter penalty shot in the fourth. Song Donglun, the team's leading scorer at the 2014 FINA Asian Games, added a pair of 6-on-5 scores.
UC Davis kicks off its official 2015 slate at the LouStrong Memorial Tournament at San Jose State this Saturday. The Aggies will take on California and Cal State Monterey Bay, plus the national teams of China and Brazil in exhibition play.
