Jan. 10, 2015 LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State's Raven Benton scored 15 of her game-high 17 points in the seocnd half -- including the go-ahead three-pointer with 0.4 seconds remaining in the game -- lifting the host 49ers to a 63-60 victory over UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at The Walter Pyramid.
The loss dropped the Aggies to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in Big West Conference play after they had tied the game with 27 seconds on a pair of free throws by Sydnee Fipps. Long Beach State, which was receiving votes in the latest Associated Press poll, won its 13th consecutive game, improving to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, surviving a Celia Marfone heave at the buzzer that glanced off the left side of the rim as time expired.
Fipps shared game-high honors with 17 points to go with four rebounds and five assists, joined in double figures by senior Kelsey Harris (15) and junior Alyson Doherty (13). Junior Celia Marfone set a season high with 12 rebounds, marking her third-straight double-digit rebounding performance.
Leading by 11 points at the break, the 49ers broke out of the gates quickly in the second half, scoring 12 of the first 16 points in the period, eventually regaining the lead on a pair of free throws by Benton at the 14:44 mark. Fipps and Harris (three) responded with back-to-back baskets to start the back-and-forth finish as neither team led by more than two.
Doherty nailed her second three-pointer of the year from the left corner to tie the game at 50 and, after Alex Sanchez responded with a basket at the other end, Harris nailed a three from the top of the key, giving the Aggies a one-point, 56-55, advantage. The lead was pushed to three points after a pair of free throws by Doherty, but Lauren Spargo tied it back up at 58 with her third three of the night from the left corner.
The two teams traded free throws with Dooley and Fipps finishing under pressure, setting up Benton's last-shot heroics.
Benton was one of four 49ers in double figures as Hallie Meneses (12), Spargo (11), and Dooley (12), all accomplished the feat.
An early 7-0 burst after the home team drained a three-pointer to start the game got the Aggies out running, holding Long Beach State to without a point for almost five minutes. Lauren Spargo drained a three to end the drought, but the UC Davis run grew to 13-3 after long balls from Harris and Dani Nafekh, putting the Aggies up seven.
The Aggies, who shot 50 percent from beyond the arc against one of the nation's top three-point defensive units, then closed the first half on a 12-2 run over the final 5:09 after the 49ers turned a seven-point deficit at 18-11 with 10 minutes to go, into a one-point game at the 5:24 mark. Three-pointers from Harris and Nafekh around a Fipps drive, and a pair of buckets inside by Doherty gave UC Davis a 30-19 advantage into the locker room at the break.
UC Davis finished shooting 44 percent from the field and hit 40 percent (10-for-25) from beyond the arc against a Long Beach State defensive unit that entered the week ranked among the top five in the nation in three-point defense. The 49ers, who forced the Aggies into 28 turnovers for the game, shot just under 37 percent from the floor, but hit on a 44 percent clip in the second half to rally.
After playing seven of its last eight on the road, UC Davis returns home for two games at The Pavilion, hosting UC Riverside on Thursday (Jan. 15) and Cal State Fullerton on Saturday (Jan. 17). Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
