Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior Kaylin Squyres hammered out a match-high 15 kills while sophomore Kendall Walbrecht chipped in eight kills and a .316 average to lead UC Davis to a 25-15, 25-15, 25-21 sweep of San Jose State in collegiate women's volleyball action at the Pavilion Saturday night.

The Aggies collect their first win of the year in their 2014 home opener, improving to 1-4. The Spartans, who lost to Portland in neutral-site action earlier on Saturday, slip to 0-6.

UC Davis hit .223 for the match, helped by a .306 clip in the first set. The Aggies outkilled the Spartans by a 41-27 margin. Senior Megan Lancaster led her team with 15 digs with Squyres next in line at 11.

For SJSU, libero Yavianliz was a bright spot with 16 digs. Freshman Sara Hibbs figured on six of her team's 7.0 team blocks.

San Jose State employed a run of five unanswered to challenge to a 12-11 deficit, UC Davis dominated the first set with a 7-3 start and a 13-3 finish. Squyres was errorless with five kills in leading the Aggies to .306 hitting while the Spartans struggled to just .032 hitting.

The Aggie junior added another six kills in the second set while Walbrecht added 5-1-9 attacking in the second. SJSU managed just six kills in the frame, hitting .000 overall. Lancaster chipped in six digs in the second set, although her top contribution was an unlikely assist: Spartan setter Breann Robinson nearly served up an ace on the third point, but Lancaster made a diving save that immediately led to a Squyres kill off tape.

The Spartans threatened to avoid the sweep throughout the third set, holding leads of 11-9 and 12-10 early on. Squyres scored three kills in a six-point span to give UC Davis a 15-14 lead at the media timeout, but SJSU then followed with four of the next five in amassing an 18-16 lead. Aima Eichie, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker, provided a rare spark as a passer, picking up seven of the Spartans' attempt to float-serve the Aggies. Eichie also had two kills to keep UC Davis within reach of its guest before Erika Conners could serve up four points in a 5-0 finishing run.

The Aggies close out their weekend with an afternoon home match against Portland at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
