Sept. 27, 2014 DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman goalkeeper
Spencer Creed posted 22 saves while
Sean Grab netted a total seven goals in a pair of UC Davis wins at its own Aggie Shootout men's collegiate water polo tournament at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday. The No. 10 Aggies ran away to a 17-5 win over Cal Lutheran in their morning matchup, then rode an 8-0 run to claim a 13-9 victory against No. 18 Navy in the Day 1 finale.
UC Davis improves to 5-7 for the year.
Grab led all Aggie scorers with three goals while Chris Richardson, Max Vigeant, Jacob Ley and Mark Coufal each added two against CLU. Creed tallied 10 blocks in that win. Then in the nightcap with the Midshipmen, Grab and Richardon each recorded four goals with Creed stepping up to 12 saves to help UC Davis secure its second win over a Top 20 opponent this season.
The Aggies never trailed in their morning win over the Kingsmen. Grab assisted on goals by Richardson and Beckwith, then put his own name in the scoresheet with a counterattack finish amidst a 4-0 start. UC Davis stayed afloat with two goals in the second to hold a 6-2 edge at halftime before exploding for six tallies in the third. Creed, who kept CLU at bay with four saves in the second period, stopped a penalty shot as part of his three blocks in the third. UC Davis maintained no smaller than a seven-goal advantage the rest of the way, scoring five straight in the fourth.
In the nightcap, the Aggies scored all three of their first-quarter goals in five-meter penalties. Senior Teddy Nicholson drew the first two, with Grab and Richardson converting in order. After Navy pulled to a 3-2 lead on a Matt Newby power play goal, Grab equalized with another penalty shot, this time drawn by sophomore Max Vigeant. However, the Mids rallied to a two-goal lead, taking a 4-3 edge on Will Weggeland's goal out of two meters with 2:27 in the first. UC Davis drew a kickout to close the opening period but could not win the second-quarter sprint to extend the power play. Navy took control and evened the personnel to 6-on-6 before extending its lead to 5-3 on Huber's goal in that first possession.
However, that goal proved to be the Mids' for the next 12 minutes. Grab and Richardson each scored twice in that second period to flip the two-goal deficit into an 8-5 advantage at the halftime break. Vigeant made it six unanswered when he scored from the perimeter to start the third. Sophomore Spencer Galli completed a counterattack with a last-second flip to Nicholson, who redirected the ball from two meters, pushing the Aggie lead to 10-5. Then Richardson finished the 8-0 UC Davis run when his 6-on-5 chance from the 1 spot caromed off both posts and found the back of the cage with 2:59 remaining in the third.
Navy answered with a 4-1 comeback run late in the third and early in the fourth frames but Creed stayed ahead of the Mids' tough two-meter play with four key saves in the final quarter. A post-to-post goal between local heroes Nicholson and Michael Wright set the board to its final state of 13-9 with 2:22 left.
Nicholson finished the day with nine total drawn exclusions, including the two five-meter fouls against Navy. Freshmen Talon Gay and Cory Laidig provided defensive highights against CLU with three steals apiece.
The Aggie Shootout continues through Sunday. UC Davis takes on Chapman at 10:20 a.m. before closing the tournament against 19th-ranked Whittier at 3 p.m.
