SMU edges UC Davis in close match, 3-2

Sept. 22, 2014

Results (stroke play, Saturday) | Live scoring (match play, Sunday-Monday)

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Blair Lewis and Betty Chen each posted wins for the UC Davis women's golf team on Monday but SMU came from behind in the remaining pairings to edge the Aggies, 3-2, and claim the inaugural East & West Match Play Championship, co-hosted by Michigan and Wisconsin.
The second-seeded Aggies advanced to the final with a 3-2 win over Wisconsin on Sunday while fourth-seeded SMU upended top-seeded Ohio State by the same score. The championship match was just as close.
The three-day tournament was a combination of stroke and match play for the eight participating teams and was designed to be similar to the 2015 NCAA Championships which will be enjoying a makeover from stroke-only play next spring.
Lewis defeated Jenny Haglund, 2&1, while Chen rolled past Katie Page, 6&5 for the Aggies' two points. However, Alexandra Rossi recovered from an early three-hole deficit against Andrea Wong to post a 2&1 win while Jennifer Park beat UC Davis sophomore Paige Lee, 4&3. The Mustangs' Lindsey McCurdy trailed Beverly Vatananugulkit by four holes during the first half of their match before winning 1 up.
The two matches over the past two days were the first for UC Davis since it started playing varsity golf in 2005.
Lewis and Haglund were all square in their showdown heading into the 14th hole but Lewis' par on that hole, as well as No. 15, put her up by two. She clinched the match after bogeys by both players on the par-4 17th. Chen, meanwhile, halved the opening hole with Paige but won the next two, stretched her lead to three holes at the turn, and then won each hole from No. 11 to No. 13 to put away the match early.
Wong opened a three-hole advantage against Rossi just five holes into their match before Rossi eventually tied things up heading to the back nine. Wong's birdie on the par-3 15th squared the match later but Rossi took the next two to win it. Lee's eagle on the long par-5, 580-yard first hole put her in front early against Park but Park took a one-hole lead after No. 7 and didn't trail the rest of the way.
Vatananugulkit stormed to a four-hole lead after just seven holes after winning three straight, getting a birdie on the par-3 seventh to cap the run. But McCurdy rebounded and eventually tied the match at No. 13 before taking a one-hole lead on No. 14. Vatananugulkit responded with a birdie on the No. 15 before McCurdy's birdie on No. 17 gave her the lead back for good.
UC Davis, which has been to five consecutive NCAA regionals after winning five straight Big West Championships, hopes the experience this past weekend will be useful for a hopeful appearance at the national finals which has adopted a combination of stroke and match play. The women's championship will mirror the men's and precede the men's next May in Florida.
