HONOLULU - Junior utility Caity Lopes da Silva scored with 1:17 remaining to help No. 9 Hawai'i escape a Big West Conference upset, defeating No. 16 UC Davis by a 5-4 final at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex Saturday evening. Senior Hannah Curran scored two goals for the Aggies while junior goalkeeper Jillian Wilding posted a career-high 14 saves.
The Aggies slip to 12-16 overall and finish the conference season with an 0-5 slate. The Rainbow Wahine improve to 16-9 for the year, 3-2 in Big West play.
Curran was one of four UC Davis scorers in the defensive battle. Junior Keelia Houston scored on a counterattack early in the second quarter while senior Alex Rawlinson drew an exclusion and converted the ensuing 6-on-5 chance later in that period. The two teams locked up in a 3-3 tie at the halftime break.
Hawai'i freshman Chloe Barr scored the second of her team-leading two goals midway through the third period to push the host up to a 4-3 lead. Curran hit her second goal with 3:02 left in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4. Wilding made a big save on a Wahine 6-on-5 chance down the stretch to momentarily preserve the tie, but Lopes da Silva ultimately put UH up for good with her goal at the 1:17 mark.
UC Davis hosts Santa Clara for its regular-season finale on April 19, then will head to the Big West Conference tournament the following weekend.
