No. 14 Aggies Sweep Final Day Of Home Tourney

Feb. 16, 2014

DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Carla Tocchini scored six total goals while senior Alex Rawlinson added another four to lead 14th-ranked UC Davis to wins over Bakersfield and Cal State East Bay in Sunday's portion of the 34th Aggie Shootout women's water polo tournament at Schaal Aquatics Center. The Aggies came back from a 3-0 deficit in a 10-6 win over the Roadrunners to open the day, then rolled to a 15-4 victory over the Pioneers in the tournament finale.

UC Davis improves to 8-7 for the year.

Tocchini, who led the Aggies with 10 goals for the tournament, scored four in her team's early-morning victory against Bakersfield then added another two in the nightcap with CSUEB. Rawlinson had a goal and an assist in the first-quarter comeback with the `Runners, then supplied a hat trick to lead 11 UC Davis scorers against the Pioneers.

The Aggies surrendered three unanswered goals to kick off the Bakersfield game, ending with Kristen Jensen's score from two meters with 2:29 left in the first quarter. Rawlinson put UC Davis on the board on the next possession with a lob from four meters out, then assisted Tocchini at center just under the one-minute mark. Paige Oreglia tied the contest at 3-3 with an outside shot in the waning seconds of the opening quarter, then assisted Tocchini for the go-ahead early in the second.

CSUB junior Janelle Shelby tied things up with her successful power play on the next trip down, but the Roadrunners went scoreless for the next 12 minutes. Aggie senior Hannah Curran scored back-to-back during a run of five answered, helping her team hold a 7-4 lead at the break and a 9-4 led through the midway point of the third.

UC Davis junior Keelia Houston also netted two goals in the win over Bakersfield. She converted an assist from Katrina Husted to close the first half, then scored on a rebound-and-putback combination to set the board at 9-4.

Rawlinson scored one goal each in the first, second and third quarters in the afternoon victory over East Bay. Sara Hudyn, the defending Western Water Polo Association scoring champion, had hit a 6-on-5 attempt to bring the Pioneers to within a 3-2 deficit late in the first, but Rawlinson's perimeter strike made it 4-2 and launched a UC Davis run of eight unanswered. The Aggies held a 7-2 edge at the halftime break and a 12-2 advantage with a minute left in the third before Hudyn struck again at the 0:25 mark before the final period.

Husted had goals in the first and third quarters while Tocchini delivered hers in the second and third to aid the UC Davis scoring effort. Katrina Husted's younger sister, Olivia, made her UC Davis debut by manning the Aggie cage for the final 5:33. Junior Jillian Wilding started at goalkeeper for four saves in the first half, then sophomore Haley Cameron stopped two shots in the third quarter before giving way to Olivia for the final stretch. The younger Husted faced five Pioneer shots, blocking the only one on frame (by Olivia Mackell).

In Sunday's only neutral-site action, Jensen scored six goals to help Bakersfield cling to a 7-6 win over East Bay. The freshman driver hit the go-ahead on a power play with just 14 seconds left in regulation. Hudyn fired a back-handed shot at the buzzer in the hopes of forcing an overtime but her attempt barred out off the left side of the cage.

UC Davis returns to action at the UC Irvine Invitational on February 22-23. The Aggies, pooled in an all-UC group, face the host Anteaters at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday morning, then will face either Cal or UC Santa Barbara that afternoon.
