DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman center Carla Tocchini recorded a hat trick while senior Alex Rawlinson combined for three goals as 14th-ranked UC Davis split its Saturday action at the Aggie Shootout women's water tournament held at Schaal Aquatics Center. The Aggies defeated Sonoma State, 14-6, then fell to No. 2 Stanford by a 17-5 final in the nightcap.
UC Davis moves to 6-7 for the season.
Tocchini's three goals led 11 different Aggie scorers in the morning victory over the Seawolves. She netted two even-strength goals in the first quarter to help her team to a 4-1 start, then completed her hat trick with a 6-on-5 conversion with 1:49 left in the third quarter. Redshirt freshman Sammi Murphy added two goals, completing a power play to close the second quarter and boost UC Davis to a 8-2 halftime lead, then finishing a counterattack on a Paige Oreglia assist to open the third period.
Two Aggie players scored their first collegiate goals against the Seawolves. Redshirt freshman Addie Green connected from two meters in the third quarter, collecting an entry pass from Bryn Lutz then sending a short lob over the SSU goalkeeper's head. True freshman Lauren Emge netted hers on another counterattack, hitting the game's final goal with less than a minute left in regulation.
Sophomore Haley Cameron made her third start of the season, tallying eight saves.
In Saturday's nightcap, Stanford enjoyed 6-for-6 shooting from Annika Dries and received another hat trick junior center Ashley Grossman to claim the 17-5 lead. The Cardinal led 9-0 at the halftime break and made it 10-0 on Dries' power-play goal to start the third before UC Davis got on the board. Sophomore Allyson Hansen broke the Aggie scoreless drought when her long lob found the back of the net at the 7:17 mark in the third.
Rawlinson, who had scored once in the win over Sonoma State, hit back-to-back goals in the final minute of the third against Stanford. She took a pass from Oreglia and drilled a bar-in missile from the 3/4 spot with a minute remaining, setting the board at 12-2 in the Cardinal's favor. Then on the next trip down, Rawlinson struck again from the same spot -- this time delivering an offspeed free throw that eluded the Stanford goalkeeper with just three seconds left in the frame.
Sophomore Ariel Arcidiacono assisted junior defender Elsie Fullerton on a 6-on-5 goal and senior Hannah Curran scored on a five-meter penalty shot in the fourth, but the Cardinal put up five goals in the finale to seal the win. Junior goalie Jillian Wilding posted five saves in the first half against Stanford and Cameron had three in her second-half relief appearance.
No. 12 San Jose State defeated Santa Clara and Bakersfield by scores of 15-5 and 10-7, respectively, in neutral-site tourney action. Bakersfield kicked off the evening portion with a 7-3 win over SSU. The Spartan-Roadrunner afternoon tilt proved to be the closest battle of the day: Bakersfield closed to win a 7-6 deficit midway in the third and had two 6-on-5 chances to equalize. However, the Spartans defended on both and forced another Bakersfield turnover before Victoria Smith and Dani Styles pushed the SJSU lead to 9-6.
The 34th Aggie Shootout concludes Sunday. UC Davis opens with Bakersfield at 8 a.m., faces its alumnae in an exhibition game at 2:15 in the afternoon, then closes the tournament against Cal State East Bay at 3:30 p.m.
