Dec. 10, 2014 DAVIS, Calif. - The Sacramento Kings will honor UC Davis head men's basketball coach Jim Les at Sleep Train Arena Thursday night in a pregame ceremony. In honor of their 30 years in Sacramento, the Kings will honor Les, other former players and staff members before TNT begins its broadcast of that night's Sacramento-Houston Rockets matchup.
"The fact that this new ownership group is reaching out to former players, creating this environment and culture that's based on people … I think it's awesome. I'm excited to be there and see some of the guys that I played with," said Les.
After making his professional debut with the Utah Jazz in 1988, Les joined Sacramento two years later and donned a Kings jersey from 1990-94. In his first season with Sacramento, the long-range specialist led all NBA players with his .461 three-point percentage.
Les also set four career highs in his inaugural year with the Kings by posting a .444 field goal percentage and per game averages of 7.2 points, 5.4 assists, 1.04 steals.
The following season saw Les represent the Kings in the Long Distance Shootout as part of the NBA's All-Star Weekend in 1992. In that event, he finished second in a legendary field that included Larry Bird (Boston Celtics), John Stockton (Utah Jazz) and Kings teammate Mitch Richmond.
Les competed in 208 games for Sacramento before continuing his NBA career in Atlanta beginning with the 1994-95 season.
Due to UC Davis' finals week, his 7-1 UC Davis men's basketball team will not return to action until Dec. 20 when the Aggies open a four-game road swing at Air Force.
