SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - With a shade more that three minutes left in regulation during Sunday's Big West Conference match at Harder Stadium, Sienna Drizin pulled UC Davis even with UC Santa Barbara at 2-2 to force overtime. By scoring the game-winner with 19 seconds remaining in double overtime, the host Gauchos collected a 3-2 win, survived a gritty Aggie comeback and prevented UC Davis from carrying an undefeated league record into Thursday night's game at CSUN.
UC Davis enters the final match of its season-long road swing with a 4-8-3 overall and 1-1-2 Big West record. UCSB improves to 8-5-2 and 2-2.
"I am proud of the way this team battled back and played to win this game, not just secure a tie," said UC Davis head coach Twila Kaufman.
"Credit UCSB for earning its second win of the weekend in the final minute. However, this team is improving with every match and strengthening its resolve. Today's comeback is a testament to who we are as individuals, and as a team."
Even though the Gauchos struck first in the 39th minute, the Aggies were able to equalize before halftime when Rachel Smith drilled a shot from 30 yards out to record her first collegiate goal in front of a hometown crowd.
"Growing up near Harder Stadium, Rachel probably pictured herself scoring a goal on this field a million times. She works hard, has done a great job finding ways to finish plays and is willing to do anything it takes to help this team win," added Kaufman.
Tied a 1-1 at the half, the score remained untouched until UCSB regained the lead with 18 minutes remaining in regulation.
As was the case late in the first half, UC Davis responded once again by netting another game-tying goal in the final minutes of the match. On a cross from Haley Hughes, Sienna Drizin connected to record her second of the season even the score once again.
UC Davis allowed only three shots throughout the extra periods, including one in double overtime. Unfortunately, that attempt led to the game-winning goal, posted with 19 seconds remaining in the match.
"Including our two goals, we were able to create a dangerous scoring opportunities throughout the entire match. That is something that the box score does not show," added Kaufman.
"This was a tough result, but we will not let this define our season. The Big West Conference's parity will allow us to rebound from Sunday's match as a stronger team. We cannot wait to return to practice and prepare for Thursday's game."
