Kecki collects two victories to lead Aggies at regionals

STANFORD, Calif. - Five Aggies won their respective Round of 128 singles match and another two will advance to Saturday's Round of 32 after winning their doubles match during the inaugural day of action the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships.

Nineteen teams are competing in this year's five-day tournament, hosted by Stanford at the Taube Family Tennis Center.

Kristy Jorgensen, Jessie Lee, Kamila Kecki, Lani-Rae Green and Samantha Martino all won their Round of 128 matchups in straight-set fashion to earn a berth in the Round of 64.

Jorgensen defeated Causeway rival Andie Mouzes, 6-2, 6-4; Lee defeated Washington State's Grace Lymer-Sullivan, 6-2, 6-4; Kecki topped Portland State's Alexa K. McDonald, 6-2, 6-3 and Martino breezed past Santa Clara's Elaine Chesoni, 6-2, 7-5.

Even though she was the only Aggie forced to compete in a third set during her opening round singles match, Green earned her victory in an exciting manner by winning the last two sets.

After dropping the first set by a 6-4 score to Washington State's Holly Monahan, Green stormed back to win the second set, 7-5, before pulling away in final frame and posting a 6-2, third-set score.

Unfortunately for UC Davis, all five players fell in their second singles match of the day.

Lee came the closest to advancing after forcing a tiebreak in each of her two sets played against Gonzaga's Samantha Polayes. The first-year Aggie dropped her match by a 7-6(2), 7-6(3) result.

Of the five, Green drew one of the bracket's seeded singles player; Green also fell in straight sets to Lucia Butkovska - Portland's only singles seeded player - 6-2 and 6-1.

In the Main Draw Doubles bracket, Kecki and her doubles partner, Frederique Sleiffer, won a thrilling doubles tiebreaker to earn a spot in Saturday's double schedule.

Tied at 7-7, Kecki and Sleiffer stepped up when it counted the most to down Eastern Washington's Katrina Domingo/Janaya Smith, 9-7, to advance to the Round of 32. The Aggie duo will face Washington's Miki Kobayashi and Grace Sari Ysidora Saturday morning at 9 a.m. If victorious, the only UC Davis doubles pair to win a match on Friday will compete in Sunday's 10 a.m., Round of 16 contest.

Two singles rounds, and another doubles round are slated to take place in the second day of action at Stanford.
