No. 18 Aggies Battle Cal In Season Opener

Jan. 18, 2014

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Hannah Curran scored three goals and sophomore Ariel Arcidiacono added two in her Aggie debut, but No. 4 California got six goals out of 2012 Olympian Dora Antal in its 14-9 win over No. 18 host UC Davis at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies open their season at 0-1. The Golden Bears remain unbeaten at 2-0.

Curran scored from two meters in the second quarter, hit a five-meter penalty shot late in the fourth, then completed her hat trick with a 6-on-5 conversion with 1:11 left in the contest. Arcidiacono, who set a school scoring record for Colorado State in 2013, put UC Davis on the board with her power-play goal with 2:11 remaining in the first then hit an outside shot early in the third quarter to cut Cal's lead to three.

Antal, the reigning Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Week, scored four of her goals on 6-on-5 chances. Overall, the Bears converted five of their seven power plays, compared to the Aggies 4-for-13 success rate. Her first extra-player goal ignited a 3-0 start for Cal, which led 4-1 through the first quarter and 6-2 at the halftime break.

Arcidiacono's second goal at 6:22 in the third brought UC Davis to within a 6-3 deficit, but Antal scored from the left side 11 seconds later to restore the lead to four. Antal's fourth goal made it 9-4 near the end of the third quarter.

UC Davis drew an exclusion with a second left in the third quarter to give itself a chance to open the fourth with a power play. Freshman Hannah Harvey won the sprint, then junior utility Paige Oreglia collected a pass from Curran to score from the five position in converting that 6-on-5 chance. Oreglia's goal cut the Cal lead to four, as did Bryn Lutz' power-play goal at the 6:19 mark.

However, the Golden Bears responded with a Victoria Williams 6-on-5 goal, never allowing their hosts any closer in the contest. Pippa Saunders scored back-to-back later in the fourth to extend the lead to 14-6 before the Aggies finished with three unanswered: Curran's two goals plus a backhanded shot from two meters by senior Erin Schlueter.

UC Davis returns to action at Sonoma State on Saturday, Jan. 25, facing the Olympic Club for a noon exhibition before taking on the host Seawolves at 3 p.m.
