Final Stats
RENO, Nev. - Devon Damelio and Valerie Brain each had a match-high nine kills Friday afternoon, hitting .353 and .467, respectively, as the UC Davis women's volleyball team swept Weber State for its second straight win at the University of Nevada's Wolf Pack Invitational.
The Aggies won 25-17, 25-15, 25-21. After starting the season 0-3 at the tough LSU Invitational, they've now won two straight matches - both by three-set sweeps - and are 2-3 overall. Weber State lost earlier in the day to Nevada and is 3-3 after its third consecutive loss.
Five different players had services aces for UC Davis while Quinn added seven kills and hit .778 after not committing an error. The Aggies also posted 10 team blocks including a half-dozen block assists from Quinn.
"In general, over the weekend, I thought we've done a tremendous job from the service line and executing a service strategy for the entire match," said head coach Jamie Holmes. "I thought last night against Nevada was excellent execution and I thought today we did a good job as well."
A 9-3 run in the first set, keyed by kills from Katie Quinn and Brain, pushed UC Davis to an early 10-5 lead. The margin was six points later in the set before Quinn and Jenny Woolway teamed to block Rebecca Fuchs, and Woolway followed with a solo block of Fuchs on the next play, helping the Aggies take a 20-12 advantage. Two consecutive kills from Damelio ended the set.
UC Davis was at its best in the second set, connecting on 14 kills with just two errors and finishing with a .400 hitting percentage. It was only an 10-7 lead but Brain had back-to-back kills and then added another two points later to help push the lead to 14-7. The Wildcats got to within four points three times after that but the Aggies scored nine of the last 12 points to win by 10.
The Aggies led the third set most of the way, withstanding three Wildcat service aces, including two in a row from Ciera Borho, for an 11-7 early lead. Weber State stayed close, however, eventually taking a 15-14 lead after a triple-block and a UC Davis hitting error to cap a 5-0 run.
The teams exchanged leads two times before a pair of attack errors by the Wildcats and a kill from Damelio put UC Davis in front for good 21-19. A block by Quinn and Woolway on the final play sealed the sweep.
Audrey Biggs had eight kills for Weber State while Borho had five digs and two services aces.
The Aggies will finish play at the Wolf Pack Invitational with an 11 a.m. match against Grand Canyon and a 4 p.m. matchup with Illinois State. The match with GCU will be broadcast on www.ucdavisaggies.com.
