MONTEREY PARK, Calif. - Juniors Katie Edwards and Liliana Alvarez won conference titles in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively, to lead UC Davis on Day 3 of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation swimming & diving championships, held at East Los Angeles College Friday.

The two championships helped propel the Aggies back into first place in the team standings with one day remaining. UC Davis finished with 438 points, nine ahead of Hawai'i and 11 in front of third-place Brigham Young.

Edwards led a 1-2-5 Aggie finish in the 200 free, breaking school and championship records with a time of one minute, 47.11 seconds. She surpassed the old benchmark of 1:47.29, set by Kayleigh Foley at last year's MPSF meet. Junior Samantha Shellem placed second in the 200 free at 1:47.46 while junior Haley Porter finished fifth with a 1:50.39, just off the season-best 1:50.15 she hit in the prelim session. Adding Bridget Bugbee's 11th-place showing, UC Davis picked up 57 points in the team standings from that lone event.

The Aggies gained additional ground one event later when Alvarez won the 100 breast with a 1:01.25 time, a follow-up to the season-best 1:00.80 that led the morning prelims. Senior Morgan Lee hit a 1:02.34 in that event for third-place points as part of a 42-point surge for UC Davis.

Sophomore Samantha Rados provided one of the Aggies' top highlights with her two performances in the 400 individual medley. She delivered a monster personal record of 4:20.61 in the prelims, a six-second improvement over her seed time and a four-second cut from her previous career best. Rados followed with an even faster 4:20.25 in the final to place fourth, second in school history only to Heidi Kucera's 4:14.70 at the 2011 MPSF meet.

The Aggies also received championship-final points in the 100 backstroke, in which Hilary Hunt placed third with a PR of 54.56; and the 100 butterfly, where Megan Leung took fifth at 54.88. Hunt's time in the 100 back moved her into second in the UC Davis record book behind Ashley Chandler's 54.03 at the 2010 Big West championships.

Meanwhile, in diving action at the U.S. Air Force Academy, UC Davis had all four of its competitors advance to the consolation final. Freshman Hanna Tears led the Aggies with a 241.20 on the 3-meter springboard, edging teammate Lucy Lafranchise's 237.55.

The MPSF Championships conclude on Saturday with the 1,650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay. UC Davis looks to reclaim the title won in the inaugural meet in 2011.
