FULLERTON, Calif. - UC Davis overcame a 2-0 deficit with wins in the third and fourth sets before falling in five to Cal State Fullerton in Big West Conference women's volleyball action at Titan Gym Friday night. The Aggies, who slipped to 8-7 overall and 0-2 in conference, lost by scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-27, 21-25 and 15-11.
Senior opposite Devon Damelio tallied 14 kills, a career-high 24 digs and seven blocks for UC Davis. Junior middle blocker Katie Quinn finished strong with 10 kills and a .364 hitting average, setter Jenny Woolway picked up 21 digs and sophomore Kaylin Squyres registered a double-double of 16 kills and 12 digs. Junior libero Megan Lancaster missed her career high by one dig, finishing with 19. Junior middle blocker Victoria Lee posted eight blocks, including back-to-back assists that helped the Aggies reverse a 24-20 deficit in the third.
The Titans won the strength of their middle and right-side hitters. Senior opposite and Arizona transfer Alyse Hensley tallied 20 kills with a match high 32 digs. Another senior opposite, Leah Best, added 15 kills, .351 hitting and six blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Holland Crenshaw finished at 11-2-18 for a .500 clip on the attack. Bre Moreland led the left side with 20 kills on a team-high 64 swings.
UC Davis struggled offensively in the first two sets, combining for more errors (17) than kills (14) to compile a minus-.043 average heading into the break. Meanwhile, CSF lit up the attacking numbers for averages of .310 and .412 in claiming the 2-0 match lead.
The tables turned during a tightly contested third set that featured 16 ties and five lead changes. Crenshaw had a kill and a block assist during a 5-1 run that put the Titans up 24-20 for quadruple match point. Squyres scored the side-out kill to send herself to the service line, then Damelio and Lee teamed up for consecutive stuffs to cut the deficit to 24-23. Squyres served up an ace to even the frame at 24-24. Hensley ended Squyres' serving run with a kill. Now trailing 25-24, UC Davis avoided the sweep with three straight kills by Damelio, junior Valerie Brain and Katie Quinn down the stretch.
Damelio and Squyres continued their offensive charge through the fourth, scoring five kills each. Damelio, who had nine digs in the third, added another six in the fourth. Quinn served up three straight points to open the frame, including a service ace at 3-0, helping the Aggies ignite a wire-to-wire set victory. The Titans managed to close the gap to 22-20 near the end but Squyres answered with a kill and an ace to help complete the win and force the rubber set.
Despite spotting UC Davis a 2-0 start in the fifth, Cal State Fullerton never trailed after Best scored a block assist and kill to make it 5-3. The Aggies managed to catch up when Woolway's ace knotted the score at 8-8. A Squyres kill brought it to 9-9 two points later. However, the Titans scored six of the last eight points to close out the victory. Moreland scored the 14th and 15th points with back-to-back kills.
The two teams battled to exactly 200 digs in a match that clocked in at two hours, 25 minutes. This is also the eighth time in the last 13 meetings that the Aggies and Titans have gone to five sets. UC Davis now falls to 0-5 in such matches in the 2013 season.
The Aggies conclude their Southern California road trip with a 7 p.m. match at UC Riverside on Saturday.
