Oct. 18, 2013

Final Stats

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Sophomore Kaylin Squyres recorded a double-double of 16 kills and 13 digs, junior Katie Quinn hit .500 with five blocks, and senior setter Jenny Woolway picked up a team-high 20 digs in leading UC Davis to a four-set, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20 victory over Cal Poly in Big West Conference women's volleyball action at Mott Athletics Center Friday night.

The Aggies improve to 11-8 for the year and even their conference ledger to 3-3. The Mustangs move to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in Big West play.

Squyres posted 11 of her 16 total kills in the first and third sets to pace UC Davis offensively. Junior middle blocker Victoria Lee added 10-2-21 attacking for a .381 average while providing four blocks on net defense. Quinn hit an errorless 7-for-14 while leading the Aggies in stuffs.

For Cal Poly, sophomore Hannah Schleis led all players with 18 kills while freshman middle Taylor Gruenewald chipped in 13 kills and five blocks.

UC Davis rallied back from a 17-15 deficit to pick off the victory in the first set. Schleis scored back-to-back kills to flip a 6-4 Aggie lead into an 8-6 Mustang edge. Cal Poly did not trail again until a service error and a pair of Jennifer Keddy hitting errors gave UC Davis a 18-17 advantage. Keddy regrouped to tally a kill, tying the set at 18-18, but Squyres responded with a kill and a block assist to forge a 20-18 lead for the Aggies. Cal Poly senior Megan McConnell answered with consecutive kills to equalize again at 20-20, but Squyres, Lee and Quinn each had kills in a 5-2 finish for UC Davis.

Cal Poly again came out strong in the second, crafting a 12-8 lead behind five kills by McConnell. This time, they never surrendered the edge, although consecutive blocks by Lee cut the Mustang lead to as slim as 18-17 later in the frame. McConnell scored on a block and Gruenewald put down a kill in a 3-0 run to restore the Cal Poly margin to four. Schleis scored two more kills down the stretch to preserve the set win and send the teams to the locker rooms in a 1-1 match tie. The Mustangs hit a robust .394 in that second set while UC Davis managed just seven kills and a .115 average.

As they had in the first two sets, the Mustangs carried a comfortable lead early in the third set. UC Davis scored four of the first six before Cal Poly stormed to a 14-10 advantage on the strength of two service aces and two Schleis kills. The Aggies flipped the script from the previous set, scoring six straight to transform a 16-14 deficit into a 20-16 lead. Quinn had two block assists in that stretch, then added a kill in the final run to lift UC Davis to a five-point set victory.

The Aggies never trailed in the fourth. Woolway and Quinn each had a kill and a block to propel UC Davis to a 9-4 start, and kills from Squyres and Lee made it 11-5. Gruenewald contributed a block and a kill to help Cal Poly to a 3-0 run that reduced the deficit to three, and a McConnell kill later reduced the Aggie lead to 17-15. Squyres, Damelio and junior Mary Schroeder each scored kills to bump the UC Davis edge to 23-17. The Aggies established match point on a Damelio-Lee block - the team's ninth for the match - then received the overall winner on an errant Mustang serve.

Woolway's 20 digs marks the third straight match she has hit that plateau, and the fourth in the last five matches. She already rates as the program's all-time digs leader among setters.

The Aggies head south for a 7 p.m. match at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
