DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's team came up just short after dropping two singles matches in three sets en route to a 4-3 loss against Montana on Thursday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
Toki Sherbakov and Hugo Verdi-Fortin each posted come from behind victories, dropping the first set before rallying for wins. Despite three singles victories, the Aggies were swept in doubles play to drop their eighth consecutive dual match. UC Davis fell to 3-12 overall while the Grizzlies improved to 10-4 on the season.
Montana started by securing the doubles point, taking 8-2 victories in both the No. 2 and 3 positions. Sherbakov and Josh Albert also dropped their doubles match, falling to the team of Caruk and Warren, 8-3 at the No. 1 spot.
Kyle Miller made quick work of Mikolaj Caruk at the No. 2 position, taking a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Sherbakov fell behind early before bouncing back to a 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 win over Carl Kuschke. Verdi-Fortin also dropped the first set but managed to grind out a victory by defeating Michael Facey, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6.
The Grizzlies were able to win the remaining singles matches however, including two three-set matches of their own. Alec Haley was down early but battled to a third set despite a 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 loss to Andreas Luczak at the No. 6 position. Josh Albert also fell in three sets to Ethan Vaughn, 7-6, 1-6, 6-1.
UC Davis will be back in action this weekend, traveling to No. 26 Fresno State on Saturday, Apr. 7 at 4 p.m.
