DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team couldn't add a second Big West win this weekend, dropping a 7-0 match to UC Irvine on Sunday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
The Aggies were winless on the day after dropping all three doubles matches and the singles contests. UC Davis completed its conference portion of the schedule and dropped to 4-14 on the season with a 1-4 league mark. The Anteaters improved to 6-15 overall and 3-1 in Big West play.
Josh Albert and Hugo Verdi-Fortin had the best showing for the Aggies in doubles action before falling to UC Irvine's team of Gould/Jung, 8-3. The Anteaters secured the doubles point with 8-2 and 8-1 wins in the No. 2 and 3 positions, respectively.
UC Davis had two players win their respective opening sets before falling in a third-set tiebreaker. Verdi-Fortin posted a 6-4 win in set one at the No. 3 spot before falling to Jon Kazarian, 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (8). Chris Aria also fell in his No. 4 singles contest, dropping a 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 (8) match to Shuhei Shibahara. UC Irvine was able to win in straight sets in the remaining singles matches to complete the sweep.
The Aggies also celebrated senior day on Sunday, recognizing three graduating seniors, Chris Aria, Josh Albert and Nick Hallchurch.
UC Davis will have a pair of matches next week before competing at the Big West Championships, starting with Hawaii-Hilo at home on Tuesday, Apr. 17.
