DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team got back in the win column in a big way, taking a 5-2 victory over Big West foe UC Riverside on Saturday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
After earning the doubles point the Aggies managed four singles wins, two of which were three-set victories. UC Davis snapped a nine-match losing streak to improve to 4-13 on the season with a 1-3 mark in conference play while the Highlanders fell to 6-14 and 0-2 in league matches.
Josh Albert and Hugo Verdi-Fortin posted the first win of the day for the Aggies, cruising to an 8-1 doubles victory over the team of Gastao/Griffin in the No. 2 spot. Chris Aria and Alec Haley managed to secure the doubles point, defeating UC Riverside's pair of Roberts/Peters, 8-5.
Toki Sherbakov defended the No. 1 position in impressive fashion, taking a straight-set victory over Felix Macherez, 7-5, 6-2. Kyle Miller added a top ranked victory in the No. spot, grinding out a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Jimmy Roberts. Albert turned in another straight-set win by downing Simon Peters in the No. 5 position, 6-3, 6-3. Haley rounded out the singles wins for UC Davis, posting a victory at the No. 6 spot over Kelly Dickson, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
The Aggies will be back at home tomorrow, celebrating senior day while hosting UC Irvine in a 12 p.m. match.
