STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Carey Faber scored four goals and junior Jessica Dunn added three, helping 14th-ranked UC Davis to within a goal of No. 5 San Jose State for the second straight weekend during the Stanford Invitational women's water polo tournament at Avery Aquatic Center Saturday. The Aggies lost to the Spartans by a 13-12 final after falling to the host Cardinal, 18-6, in morning action.
UC Davis moves to 2-6 for the year, having played six contests against teams among the national top five.
Faber's career-high output marked her first hat trick since her sophomore year of 2010, when she performed two in March. She posted two on even strength and two on 6-on-5 opportunities. Ariel Feeney, Alicia Began, Hannah Curran, Elsie Fullerton and Carmen Eggert each had one goal to round out the Aggie total. Junior goalkeeper Riane Woods tallied 12 saves for UC Davis, which came back from an 11-8 deficit to a one-goal margin in the fourth. In similar fashion, UC Davis erased a 6-4 halftime deficit before claiming a one-goal lead in the previous meeting with SJSU on January 28.
Dunn and freshman Keelia Houston each had two goals in the morning loss to Stanford. Fullerton and senior Kaylee Queipo-Miller each netted one. Woods (one save) and Rachel Tatusko (three saves) split goalkeeping chores in the cage. The Cardinal scored seven unanswered in the first quarter and held an 11-1 lead at the break before UC Davis managed five goals in the second half.
The Aggies continue play at the Stanford Invite against No. 3 USC at 9:10 a.m. Sunday morning. They will then take on a similar finisher among the group of No. 2 California, No. 4 UCLA, No. 10 Hawai'i or No. 12 Michigan in Sunday afternoon's placing round.
