NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Senior center Alicia Began scored her first hat trick of the year while junior Carmen Eggert totaled four goals as No. 13 UC Davis split its second-day contests at the UCI Invitational women's water polo tournament Sunday. The Aggies soundly defeated No. 19 UC San Diego in their morning game, then lost an 8-7 squeaker to No. 6 Hawai'i in the nightcap at the Corona Del Mar High School site.
UC Davis, which finished 14th in the tournament, moves to 5-12 for the season. The Aggies now have played nine games against teams ranked in the national top 10.
Began's hat trick helped the Aggies take a 3-2 lead through the first period and a 7-4 halftime edge before exploding for five goals in the third. Sophomore Hannah Curran also tallied three goals while Eggert chipped in two more. Six other UC Davis players - Carey Faber, Katie Schlueter, Ariel Feeney, Kaylee Queipo-Miller, Dakotah Mohr and Jessica Dunn - each had one goal against UCSD. Junior goalkeeper Riane Woods posted four saves.
Eggert scored two goals in the relative defensive battle against Hawai'i. Dunn, Feeney, Mohr and freshman Allyson Hansen had one goal each to round out the offensive totals while Woods stopped nine shots against the seven Wahine goals. Hawai'i took a 4-2 lead at halftime and managed to hold off its future leaguemate the rest of the way.
The UCI Invitational annually rates as the toughest tournament field of the year, including the NCAA Championships. This year's version featured each of the top 10 teams plus six of the next 10.
UC Davis returns home to host Pacific and UCSD in the one-day, two-game Aggie Shootout tournament on Saturday. The two visitors will square off in a neutral-site game at 10 a.m, then the Aggies will rematch the Tritons at 2 p.m.
