DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team swept the doubles matches and dominated singles action en route to a convincing 6-1 win over Weber State on Friday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
The Aggies turned in their best performance of the season, earning the first win over a Division I opponent on the season. UC Davis improved to 3-4 on the year with a 2-1 mark at home while the Wildcats dropped to 1-3.
Hugo Verdi-Fortin and Kyle Miller led the Aggies in doubles play at the No. 1 spot with an 8-5 win over Weber State's team of Unger/Good. Josh Albert and Alec Haley cruised to win in the No. 2 position, downing the pair of Hintze/Garner, 8-1. Toki Sherbakov and Chris Aria closed out the doubles competition with an 8-5 defeat of Ramstromer Pello/Trabert.
Sherbakov showed some resolve at the No. 1 singles position, extending the match to three sets where he won over Simon Unger, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. Aria also had a three-set victory in the No. 3 spot, defeating Scott Hintze, 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (9).
Miller added a win in the No. 2 position, managing a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Oliver Good while George Horowitz downed Ben Rode, 6-4. 6-3. Verdi-Fortin rounded out the singles victories, cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 6 position against Anthony Trabert.
UC Davis will have a day off on Saturday before traveling across the Causeway for a match with rival Sacramento State on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m.
