DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Marissa Brown set a school record of 10 minutes, 6.98 seconds in the 1,000-yard freestyle while four Aggies claimed event wins, leading UC Davis to a 178-117 dual victory over Nevada in women's swimming and diving action at Schaal Aquatics Center Friday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 4-2 in dual meets.
Brown's time eclipsed the previous mark of 10:12.78, set by Linda Hermann at the 2007 Big West Conference Championships. She finished second to Nevada's Jojo Mi, who posted a pool record of 10:06.90. Brown also placed second in the 500 free with a 5:00.14, behind teammate Samantha Shellem's season-best 4:55.86. Head coach Barbara Jahn cited Brown's meet as a bright spot in the meet.
"I'm just so impressed with Marissa Brown's finish in the 1,000, even though she got touched out," said Jahn. "She set a school record. That was gutsy. Then in the 500, she wasn't going to let anyone out-touch her. So that was probably the highlight."
Shellem was one of four Aggies to deliver event wins. She captured the 200 free with a 1:52.27 then enjoyed her first-place mark in the 500 free near the end of the meet. Sophomore Hilary Hunt picked up wins in both backstroke events, recording a 57.46 in the 100 and 2:05.94 in the 200. Both times are team season bests.
Junior Liliana Alvarez won both breaststroke events, touching in 1:04.92 in the 100 then hitting 2:20.72. Alvarez and senior captain Morgan Lee finished 1-2 in each of those events to give UC Davis 13-point boosts in each.
Megan Leung notched victories in the two butterfly events. Her 2:05.15 in the 200 fly surpassed her previous 2012-13 best by more than a full second while her 57.45 in the 100 fly set another team season high and led a 1-2-3 Aggie sweep. Lee edged teammate Haley Porter, 24.44 to 24.46, to claim the nine first-place points in the 50 free; then Porter turned around to edge Nevada's Mi by .04 in the 100 free.
"We have lots of season-best times but the main thing is that we finished well," said Jahn. "He had talked to the team about [Nevada's] finishes because they would be coming down from altitude and they would have a kick in the last 25. So I think maybe subconsciously, we thought about it.
UC Davis also enjoyed a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay, with the foursome of Hunt, Alvarez, Leung and junior Sabrina Cochrane compiling a winning time of 1:44.84. The Aggies conceded the meet scoring in the final two swimming events but still posted the fastest 400 free relay time of 3:31.23, fielding an `A' squad of Hunt, Porter, Bridget Bugbee and Katie Edwards.
UC Davis concludes the fall portion of its 2012-13 slate at the Missouri Invitational from November 29-December 1.
