No. 15 Aggies Battle Nation's Elite At Speedo Invite

Jan. 28, 2012

BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior Jessica Dunn scored four goals in UC Davis' morning 10-9 loss to San Jose State then sophomore Hannah Curran posted a hat trick in a 19-7 evening setback to defending national-champion Stanford at the Speedo Invitational women's water polo tournament at Cal's Spieker Aquatic Center Saturday.

The 15th-ranked Aggies fall to 2-4 for the season. The Spartans are No. 5 in Wednesday's national poll while the Cardinal held the top spot for the second straight week.

Dunn netted four goals in the morning loss to the Spartans, helping UC Davis turn a 6-4 halftime deficit into an 8-7 lead with 1:18 remaining in the third. SJSU scored the equalizer on the next possession and the first two goals in the fourth to restore its two-goal lead en route to the win. The meeting marked the second time the two teams have faced off in a six-day span, as SJSU took an 8-6 win on Sunday at its own Spartan Invitational.

Senior Ariel Feeney added two goals for the Aggies against SJSU, while junior goalkeeper Riane Woods posted 11 saves. Curran, senior Alicia Began and freshman Allyson Hansen each had one goal to account for the balance of the UC Davis output.

In the nightcap, Stanford held an 8-4 lead at halftime before scoring seven unanswered in the third to seal the victory. Besides Curran's three goals, senior Carey Faber tallied two while Feeney and senior center Dakotah Mohr rounded out of the offense with one goal apiece.

Oddly, UC Davis returns to action against the same two opponents at the Stanford Invitational. The Aggies open the tourney against the host Cardinal then squares off against the Spartans at 4:30 on Saturday.
