Women's Water Polo

No. 16 Aggies Split First Day At Spartan Invite

Jan. 21, 2012

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Junior Jessica Dunn totaled four goals to highlight UC Davis' split during the first day of the Spartan Invitational women's water polo tournament at San Jose State Aquatic Center Saturday. She posted three to lead the 16th-ranked Aggies to a 12-8 win over No. 17 UC Santa Barbara, then added another in a 13-5 loss to No. 2 California.

UC Davis opens the 2012 season at 1-1.

In addition to Dunn's hat trick, seniors Ariel Feeney and Alicia Began and freshman Allyson Hansen each tallied two goals. The Aggies scored four unanswered in a span of five minutes from late in the second period through early in the third, crafting an 8-3 lead. Dunn netted two later in the third quarter to extend the UC Davis lead to 10-4. The Gauchos never closed the gap by less than five for the remainder of the game.

In the nightcap, Kirsten Mase scored four first-half goals to help Cal storm to a 7-1 lead in the first 12 minutes of play. Junior Carmen Eggert converted a pair of 6-on-5 goals down the stretch of the first half to cut the edge to 8-4, but the Golden Bears outscored their UC sisters by a 4-1 margin in the third period to largely seal the win.

The Aggies scored four goals on a dozen 6-on-5 chances against Cal. Against UCSB, UC Davis drew four exclusions plus a five-meter foul. Senior Carey Faber finished one of the extra-player opportunities while Dunn hit the penalty shot.

Head coach Jamey Wright played three of his four goalkeepers and 20 of his 21 field players at some point during Saturday's action.

UC Davis takes on Santa Clara at 10:30 a.m. and host San Jose State at 3:30 that afternoon to close out the Spartan Invite on Sunday.
