DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis cross country team began the 2011 season by posting strong times against Sacramento State in the Aggie Open on Friday evening in Davis.
The open event was held at Putah Creek Reserve on the campus of UC Davis and featured runners from UC Davis and Sacramento State as well as several unattached competitors.
The women's 4000-meter race saw Krista Drechsler and Sarah Sumpter cross the line at 13:54 to lead the pack, while Sacramento State's Rachel Mitchell clocked in at 13:58 to finish just behind them.
Mitchell was followed by Hornet teammate Veronica Stinnett who finished with a time of 14:03. Kristine Lozoya and Kristina Taylor rounded out the scoring and recorded a time of 14:07.
The UC Davis women would take the event with 21 points while Sacramento State scored 38 points.
On the men's side, Jonathan Peterson finished the 6000-meter race in a time of 17:59, over 15 seconds faster than Sacramento State's Cole Younger who clocked in at 18:16 to finish second.
Reesey Byers finished third in a time of 18:30 while UC Davis' Axel Stanovsky (18:36) and Gregor Lloyd-Smith (18:56) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Aggie men finished with 23 points while the Hornets concluded the event with 36 points.
UC Davis returns to action Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Hornet Jamboree, hosted by Sacramento State.
