Andrade Leads Aggies in Loss

May 24, 2011

Box Score

MORAGA, Calif. - Third baseman Justin Andrade went 2-for-4 with a double and a run as the UC Davis baseball team suffered an 8-2 loss to Saint Mary's on Tuesday at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga.

The game was the final nonconference matchup of the season for UC Davis who drops to 17-34 overall. Saint Mary's improves to 25-27.

The Gaels used the strong pitching combination of starter Patrick Keane and reliever Dorsey Ek to limit UC Davis to only four hits.

Keane gave up UC Davis' first run of the game to Andrade, who singled, then moved to second base on an error by Saint Mary's shortstop Michael Gastelum. A wild pitch from Keane advanced Andrade to third before a sacrifice fly from Scott Heylman allowed Andrade to score.

The Aggies scored their second run of the game in the very next inning as Ek entered to relieve Keane, then hit Eric Johnson and Alex Dreyfuss in back-to-back at bats. The two Aggie runners on CJ Blom's sacrifice bunt before a sacrifice fly from Scott Lyman brought in Johnson. Dreyfuss would be left on third, however, when Daniel Cepin grounded out for the final out of the inning.

Ek retired nine of the next 10 Aggie batters he faced until Andrade's lead off double in the eighth broke the offensive slump, but the Gael right hander put away the next three batters he faced.

UC Davis put a runner in scoring position with two outs in the ninth inning after pinch hitter Kevin Grove's double moved Spencer Brann, who walked to start the inning, to third base. Ryan Allgrove grounded out, however, for the third out.

The Gaels scored five runs in the first two innings to take a quick lead with Patrick Wisdom connecting for a three-run home run to left field in the second. A triple by Donald Collins with two outs in the fifth scored two more runs for Saint Mary's and an RBI base hit by Wisdom brought in the final run of the game for the Gaels.

Dreyfuss and Grove were the only other Aggies to record hits.

Wisdom finished the day with a 4-for-5 performance with five RBI and was a triple away from hitting for the cycle. He also scored twice to lead the Gaels.

UC Davis closes the 2011 season with a three-game series against UC Riverside beginning Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium.
