DAVIS, Calif. - Despite taking an early 2-0 lead, the UC Davis baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision to 25th-ranked Cal after the Golden Bears put up multiple hits in the fifth, sixth and ninth innings on Wednesday at Dobbins Stadium in Davis.
UC Davis drops to 16-31 overall and snapped a five-game home winning streak while Cal moves to 29-16 on the year.
In the bottom of the second, Ryan Allgrove's base hit through the right side allowed Alex Dreyfuss to score from second base, giving the Aggies a 1-0 lead. Justin Andrade would come around to score the Aggies' second run of the inning, taking advantage of a throwing error by Cal shortstop Marcus Semien.
Cal cut UC Davis' lead in half with a run in the top of the third as Semien singled up the middle to bring in a run.
UC Davis remained hitless until the fifth inning when Popkins singled to lead off, but he was thrown out at second after Scott Lyman hit into a double play. Cal retired the Aggies in order over the next three innings.
Andrade took advantage of another Cal error, the Bears' fourth of the game, in the ninth inning to score UC Davis' third and final run. The Aggie third baseman walked to start the inning, then moved to third on a base hit from Daniel Cepin. As Cepin stole second, Cal catcher Chadd Krist overthrew to second base, allowing Andrade to cross home plate.
Cal scored twice in the fifth inning after Krist doubled with two outs to score both Semien and Austin Booker, taking a 3-2 lead. In the next inning, the Bears tagged on three additional runs and increased their lead to 6-2 before closing the game with two runs in the ninth for the 8-3 final score.
Semien led the Bears offensively, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI while Krist was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Justin Jones earned the win for Cal to move to 7-4 on the year after he limited UC Davis to only one hit and did not give up a run while striking out five in four innings of work. Scott Chew was given his first loss of the year after allowing five runs on five hits.
The Aggies continue a four-game homestand by hosting UC Santa Barbara for a Big West Conference series beginning Friday at Dobbins Stadium.
