Heylman's Homer Not Enough Against Cal Poly

May 15, 2011

Box Score

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Scott Heylman hit his fifth home run of the season, but Cal Poly completed the series sweep with an 11-4 win on Sunday at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo.

UC Davis drops to 16-30 overall and 8-10 in the Big West Conference while Cal Poly improves to 24-22 and 13-8 in league play.

The Aggies took an early 4-1 lead after scoring runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Scott Lyman walked to lead off the second inning, then Alex Dreyfuss brought him home with a two-out double to left center field. Dreyfuss would score on a throwing error by Mustangs catcher Chris Hoo to put UC Davis up 2-1.

With two outs in the top of the third, Heylman's shot to left field gave the Aggies a 3-1 lead.

In the fourth, Dreyfuss hit his second double of the day, moving CJ Blom to third after Blom walked to reach base. Daniel Cepin's sacrifice fly brought Blom in to increase UC Davis' lead.

Aggie starter Dayne Quist gave up a run in the first inning, but settled in to hold the Mustangs over the next three frames. In the bottom of the fourth, the Mustangs loaded the bases with two outs, but Quist struck out Denver Chavez to get UC Davis out of the jam.

Cal Poly took the lead back in the fifth, however, scoring four runs on only two hits as the Aggies committed three errors in the inning. Mike Miller started the inning by reaching base on a fielding error by Heylman at shortstop. DJ Gentile followed with a walk, moving Miller to second. Miller and Gentile would steal second and third, then Miller would score the first run of the inning after Dreyfuss overthrew to second in an attempt to throw Gentile out. Gentile would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch by Quist.

Hoo brought in a run with a two-out double, the first hit of the inning, then a triple from Jimmy Allen scored Cal Poly's fourth run of the inning, giving the Mustangs a 5-4 lead.

Cal Poly took a 6-4 lead with another run in the sixth, then a solo home run from Mitch Haniger extended the Mustangs' lead before four more runs in the eighth sealed the win for Cal Poly.

Heylman, David Popkins and Dreyfuss each recorded two hits, while Justin Andrade's leadoff single in the fifth inning was the only other Aggie hit of the day.

Gentile led Cal Poly by going 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.

UC Davis returns to Dobbins Stadium for four straight games, beginning with a 2:30 p.m. matchup against Cal on Tuesday.
