Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Scott Kalush hit a grand slam in the first inning, drove home a career-high six RBI and was a triple away from hitting for the cycle as UC Davis took a 9-3 win in the series opener against Cal State Northridge Friday at Dobbins Stadium in Davis.

In the second inning, Scott Heylman and David Popkins singled to put two runners on with two outs and Eric Johnson walked to load the bases for Kalush. With the count at 0-2, Kalush connected on the next pitch, clearing the left field wall for his second career home run and first career grand slam. The shot quickly put UC Davis up 4-0.

Cal State Northridge got on the board in the third after TS Reed scored on a ground out by Adam Barry, but the Aggies extended their lead by two more runs in the fourth.

Daniel Cepin was hit by a pitch to start the fourth inning, then scored from first base on a double from Justin Andrade after Andrade's hit skimmed along the left field line, staying in fair territory. Andrade would come around on a sacrifice fly from Seth Batty to give the Aggies a 6-1 lead.

The Matadors moved to within three runs after scoring twice in the fifth inning. Ridge Carpenter hit a home run of his own over the left field wall, then Drew Muren scored on a base hit from Marty Bowen.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Kalush's RBI double to left center field brought home Brett Morgan, then the Aggie catcher would score a run of his own off a base hit from Cepin to give UC Davis an 8-3 lead.
