DAVIS, Calif. - Carmen Eggert scored a game-high three goals on Sunday afternoon, including the decisive two scores in overtime, as No. 17 UC Davis scored the final three goals of the game overall to upend No. 13 Long Beach State 9-7 in a Big West Conference women's water polo match at Schaal Aquatics Center.
Lyndsay Sutterley added two first-half scores for the Aggies who are 17-10 overall while moving to 1-2 in the Big West. Ariel Feeney scored with just over a minute left in regulation, helping UC Davis force extra play.
Krizia Cerda had two goals for Long Beach State which is 11-14 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Aggies' comeback came after they enjoyed a 5-2 halftime lead only to have the 49ers rally to tie it with three straight scores in the third quarter. The teams traded goals until Meaghan Leonard's goal with 4 minutes, 36 seconds left in regulation put the 49ers in front, 7-6.
Feeney, though, tied the game with just 1:01 remaining in regulation, leading to a pair of three-minute overtime periods. Eggert, who also scored midway through the first quarter, then delivered with 14 ticks left in the first period before adding an insurance goal with 1:05 left in the second.
UC Davis held the lead throughout the first half, scoring two goals in the opening four minutes from Ashley Chandler and Eggert. Coriann Snyder put Long Beach State on the board later in the period, a score answered by the Aggies' Jessica Dunn with 44 seconds left.
A pair of goals in the second quarter from Sutterley helped put the Aggies in front 5-2 at the break. Cerda had the first of her two scores in the game during the period as well.
Three straight goals by the 49ers during a 4:20 span of third knotted the game at 5-5. Lauren Sieprath got the rally going while Cerda and Julia Garyfallou also tallied scores during the rally. Carey Faber put UC Davis back in front, 6-5, later in the period before goals from Chelsea Parks and Leonard in the fourth put Long Beach State on top, setting up the exciting finish.
Riane Woods had six saves for UC Davis while Kristen Stragier had seven for Long Beach State.
UC Davis will continue Big West play on Saturday when it hosts Pacific at noon.
