DAVIS, Calif. - Alex Dreyfuss and Justin Andrade were the only batters to register a hit as No. 12 Cal State Fullerton scored five runs in the seventh and ninth innings to claim a 14-0 win on Friday at Dobbins Stadium in the Big West Conference opener for both teams.
UC Davis moves to 5-15 overall and 0-1 in the Big West while Cal State Fullerton improves to 18-8 and 1-0 in league play.
Andrade's hit, a one-out single into left field, came in the third inning off of the Titans' starter Jake Floethe. Andrade then stole second, but would be left on base after Daniel Cepin hit into a double play to end the inning.
Floethe held UC Davis hitless until Dreyfuss' base hit through the left side in the eighth inning.
The Aggies put two runners on base in the ninth inning after Corbin Cutshaw was hit by a pitch, then moved to second on a wild pitch from Titans' reliever Walker Moore. Ryan Lucas walked two plays later, but Seth Batty hit into a double play to end the game.
Cal State Fullerton scored two runs in the first inning and a third run in the second. Scott Lyman held the Titans hitless in the fourth, but Cal State Fullerton picked up another run in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
Lyman and the UC Davis defense retired the side in the fifth, then gave up only one run in the sixth, a double to Joe Terry, but did not allow a run to cross.
In the seventh, however, the Titans' offense put up five runs on seven hits to take a 9-0 lead before following with five additional runs in the ninth, despite recording only two hits. Nick Altman entered to pitch for the Aggies and, with the bases loaded and only one out, allowed three runs to cross when he hit three straight Titan batters.
Lyman was given the loss to move to 0-3 on the year while Floethe now stands at 3-1 with the win.
UC Davis and Cal State Fullerton resume on Saturday in a 1 p.m. matchup at Dobbins Stadium. Anthony Kupbens, a junior lefty, will start on the mound for UC Davis while Cal State Fullerton will start right-hander Noe Ramirez.
