BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Freshman Hannah Curran and redshirt freshman Becca Smith each tallied hat tricks as 15th-ranked UC Davis picked up wins over two former Western Water Polo Association leaguemates at the Roadrunner Invitational women's water polo tournament at Hillman Aquatics Center Saturday morning. The Aggies jumped out early on host Cal State Bakersfield in a 17-8 victory to start the day, then prevailed in a 17-3 rout of Pomona-Pitzer hours later.
UC Davis moves to 16-6 for the season.
Smith scored three goals to lead the Aggies over the Roadrunners in the early-morning game. Jessica Dunn, Carmen Eggert, Michelle Hook and Carey Faber also added two goals each for UC Davis, which led 4-1 through the opening quarter and held a 9-3 halftime edge.
Curran posted her three-goal game in the late-morning contest against the Sagehens, helping the Aggies pile up seven goals in the opening frame. Eggert, Smith, Hook, Danelle Kenny, Dakotah Mohr and Ariel Feeney all enjoyed two-goal games in that win.
Riane Woods and Rachel Tatusko platooned in front of the UC Davis cage. Woods tallied four saves against CSUB and five against PP, while Tatusko mirrored that effort with five stops against the `Runners and four versus the `Hens. Tatusko also recorded three assists in Saturday's opener with Bakersfield.
UC Davis returns home to face top-ranked Stanford in a final contest before beginning Big West Conference play. The Aggie-Cardinal matchup begins at 1 p.m. at Schaal Aquatics Center.
