No. 17 Aggies Drop Two At UCI Invite

Feb. 26, 2011

IRVINE, Calif. - Junior Dakotah Mohr and sophomores Jessica Dunn and Carmen Eggert each totaled three goals as 17th-ranked UC Davis dropped both of its first-day contests at the UC Irvine Invitational women's water polo tournament at Anteater Pool Saturday. The Aggies lost to No. 3 UCLA by a 14-4 score in the morning, then dropped as 12-10 battle with No. 12 Long Beach State in the day's final game.

UC Davis, which has not competed in an official game since February 4, slips to 3-5 for the year.

Mohr, Eggert, Dunn and senior Rachelle Smith each tallied a goal in the morning loss to the Bruins. The seven-time NCAA champions held a 5-2 lead at the break, then exploded for nine more in the second half. Senior defender Kelly Easterday led UCLA with three goals, while Emily Greenwood and Brooke Martin each added two.

Smith converted a 6-on-5 opportunity late in the first period to allow UC Davis to within a 2-1 deficit of the Bruins, while Eggert scored on a similar chance with 2:18 remaining in the second. Mohr's goal came midway in the third period to cut the UCLA lead to 6-3, but the Bruins scored six of the next seven over a span of less than five minutes.

In Saturday's nightcap, Mohr, Dunn, Eggert and junior Ariel Feeney each netted a pair of goals. Miller and Smith chipped in the balance. The 49ers, led by Krizia Cerda's four goals, held an 8-4 halftime advantage. However, UC Davis closed the gap in the second half, outscoring its Big West Conference leaguemate by a 2-0 margin in the final frame.

Feeney had both of her goals early in the third quarter, cutting the Matador lead to 8-6. CSUN's Coriann Snyder and Miller further traded 6-on-5 goals to put the score at 9-7, but Melissa Matheson netted two scores to stretch the Matador's advantage to 12-7 heading into the fourth.

UC Davis goalkeepers Riane Woods and Rachel Tatusko split time in the cage in each game. Woods recorded 10 total saves, while Tatusko had five blocks.

The UCI Invite is considered to boast the toughest field of any collegiate tournament of the year, including the national championship. Fifteen of the 16 participants are nationally ranked, and each of the country's top 12 take part.

The Aggies will face former Western Water Polo Association rival UC San Diego at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday. Both UC Davis games on Sunday will be held at Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach.
