BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior defender Ashley Chandler and sophomore attacker Jessica Dunn each scored three goals to lead UC Davis to a 13-3 win over Cal State Bakersfield during the Cal Invitational women's water polo tournament at Spieker Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon. The Aggies also lost a 13-5 decision to the Canadian national team in an exhibition game earlier in the day.
UC Davis, ranked 17th in the national preseason poll, opens the 2011 season at 1-0.
Remarkably, Chandler's team-leading output came mere hours after winning her backstroke event in a home swimming dual against the Roadrunners earlier in the day.
Also supplying offense for the Aggies was Carmen Eggert with two goals; and Katie Schlueter, Ariel Feeney, Rachelle Smith, Lyndsay Sutterley and Hannah Curran with one apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Riane Woods tallied three saves, while junior Rachel Tatusko added five in the second half.
Dunn scored two goals in the loss to Team Canada during Saturday's previous action. Alicia Began, Becca Smith and Eggert also netted a goal to round out the five-goal total. Woods picked up four saves, while Tatusko chipped in three more in her relief stint.
The Aggies return to action on January 29-30 for the Spartan Invitational. UC Davis will face No. 7 San Jose State, Cal State Monterey Bay, No. 3 California and Santa Clara during that two-day tournament.
