RENO, Nev. - The UC Davis women's swimming and diving team edged out the Nevada Wolf Pack 123-120 in a dual meet that came down to the final event Saturday at Lombardi Pool in Reno, Nev.
The win marks the first time that the Aggies have defeated the Wolf Pack at Nevada's pool during UC Davis' Division I era.
The Aggies move to 8-2 overall and remain undefeated in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with a 3-0 record. Nevada drops to 1-7 with the loss.
UC Davis started the day strong by claiming the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. Ashley Chandler, Liliana Alvarez, Megan Leung and Samantha Capozzo turned in a time of 1:48.49 to win the event and were followed by Linda Hermann, Morgan Lee, Jenah Dawson and Lisa Bender who were second with a time of 1:50.11.
The Aggies also received two individual wins from both Kayleigh Foley and Hermann. Foley led an Aggie sweep in the 50 freestyle as she, Chandler and Capozzo claimed the top three spots. Foley's winning time was 24.11 while Chandler clocked in with a season-best time of 24.14 to finish second. Capozzo's third-place time was 25.24.
Foley and Chandler went one-two again in the 100 freestyle. Foley finished first in a time of 51.67 while Chandler was second with a time of 53.75.
Hermann turned in a season-best time of 4:28.02 to win the 400 individual medley and claimed the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:04.52.
UC Davis also saw a strong performance from Liliana Alvarez who finished first in the 200 breaststroke for the second time this weekend. Alvarez clocked in at 2:23.34.
Madeline Talt and Bridget Bugbee claimed second and third place, respectively, in the 1000 freestyle while Sarah Winters and Katelyn Griffin were second and third in the 200 freestyle. Winters was also second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:13.10 and was followed by Bugbee who finished third in the event.
After setting a UC Davis record in the one-meter board Friday, Erica Stricker led the Aggies again in diving finishing fifth in the one-meter event and sixth in three-meters.
UC Davis hosts Cal State Bakersfield Jan. 22 at Schaal Aquatics Center in the final home meet of the 2010-11 season.
