SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - UC Davis scored early and often on its way to a 10-0 victory over Cal Poly in a Big West Conference softball game at Bob Janssen Field. The Aggies scored two runs in the first inning and had a seven-run fourth on their way to a series sweep of the Mustangs and their 7th straight victory. The win also kept UC Davis in first-place by one game heading into next week's final series of the regular season.
Alex Holmes went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs while Elizabeth Santana finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored. UC Davis (25-25, 14-4) outhit Cal Poly (21-23, 10-8 Big West) in the five-inning affair by an 11-2 margin. Holmes also fired a two-hit shutout in the circle to claim her 15th win of the season.
UC Davis went to work right from the start as Santana and Jessica Gonzalez started the first inning with singles. A sacrifice by Holmes put the runners at second and third. That set the stage for Sarah Axelson, who delivered a two-run single to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead.
The score would remain 2-0 until the Aggies broke it open in the fourth. Gonzalez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and one out to force in Kelly Harman. Holmes drove in two more runs with a single to make it 6-0. Gonzalez would later score on a wild pitch, and an RBI-single by Kylie Fan upped the lead to 8-0. The final run of the inning scored on a fielding error. Holmes capped off the scoring in the fifth with a two-out double that drove in Santana.
Holmes was also equally dominant in the circle. She struck out two and walked two on her way to her second complete game victory in as many days.
UC Davis began Sunday with a one game lead over second-place Cal State Northridge. The Matadors also completed a sweep at UC Riverside so they enter the final week 13-5 in the Big West and a game behind the Aggies. UC Davis holds the tiebreaker over CSUN should the teams end the season tied. The Big West's regular season champion receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
UC Davis faces UC Santa Barbara on Friday in a doubleheader at La Rue Field. The two teams will close out the series on Saturday. Cal State Northridge will host Cal State Fullerton.
