Box Score
DAVIS, Calif. - Kyle Mihaylo and Eric Johnson hit back-to-back triples in the fourth inning and Scott Lyman gave up only two earned runs in nearly eight innings of work on the mound as UC Davis took an 8-2 win from Cal Poly on Senior Day at Dobbins Stadium Sunday.
UC Davis now stands at 21-26 overall and 5-13 in Big West Conference play while Cal Poly moves to 17-30 on the year and 8-13 in league action.
Lyman struggled early in the game as he gave up two hits and a walk and hit a batter in the first inning to give Cal Poly an early 1-0 advantage, but came back to give up only one additional run on nine hits and strike out three Mustang batters.
The UC Davis offense, led by senior Kyle Mihaylo's 2-for-3 performance, put up four runs in the bottom half of the first inning and four more in the fourth and never relinquished the lead.
Cal Poly starting pitcher Eugene Wright walked Scott Heylman, then gave up a single to David Popkins and a double to Lyman as UC Davis took a 2-1 lead midway through the first. Paul Politi's RBI single scored Lyman, then a double by Mihaylo put Politi in scoring position for freshman CJ Blom's RBI ground out to shortstop J.J. Thompson.
Heylman led off the fourth inning with a single through the left side, then advanced to second after Popkins grounded out. With one out and a runner on second, relief pitcher Tommy Erlin walked Lyman and Cal Poly loaded the bases shortly after when third baseman Evan Busby's fielding error allowed Politi to reach first base. The runners would advance on a wild pitch to bring the score to 5-1 in favor of UC Davis.
In the next at bat, Mihaylo's hit would nearly clear the left field wall, but bounced off the wall and into play for a triple that would bring home Politi and Lyman. Eric Johnson would come in the game to pinch hit for Blom and hit a triple of his own to score Mihaylo to give UC Davis the 8-1 lead.
Cal Poly would score an additional run in the fifth, but Lyman's work on the mound held the Mustangs from putting up any further runs.
The sophomore right hander gave up only one run through the sixth and seventh innings before turning over the ball to relief pitcher Scott Chew with two outs in the eighth inning. Chew would inherit three base runners, but would get UC Davis out of the inning safely after connecting on a defensive play with Heylman.
In addition to his work on the mound, Lyman went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Heylman was 2-for-3 with two runs.
For Cal Poly, David Van Ostrand was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Bobby Crocker also hit 2-for-4. Adam Melker went 2-for-5 with a run.
UC Davis will prep for a busy week in which the Aggies will play five games over the next six days. UC Davis will travel to Nevada Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. matchup against the Wolf Pack before returning to Dobbins Stadium to host Santa Clara in the final home game of the year.
