GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis team played long into the night but came away with its seventh straight victory Friday night. The Aggies defeated Portland, 4-1, in a match played at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center in Gold River beginning at 9:30 p.m. It was originally scheduled for the afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center on the UC Davis campus but was moved due to rain.
Ultimately, the two teams played singles only. When it was over, UC Davis upped its record to 9-7 on the year and remained a perfect 8-0 at home.
Sidney Brady was the first to finish for the Aggies with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 over Portland's Tessa Mini. Dahra Zamudio made it 2-0 when she defeated Megan Sporndli at No. 2, 7-5, 6-1.
Desiree Stone came from behind to defeat Lacey Pflibsen, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 to up the lead to 3-0. The match on court 5 was the next to finish. The Aggies' Ellie Edles fought off Valeska Hoath, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, to give her team an insurmountable 4-0 cushion.
The lone win for Portland (4-10) came from Stefanie Doolittle at No. 4. The match at No. 2 between Herzyl Legaspi and Stephanie Fuchs did not finish.
UC Davis return to action Tuesday when it hosts Cal State Northridge in a Big West Conference match. Doubles is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. It ends a season-long seven-match homestand for the Aggies.
