LONG BEACH, Calif. - Freshman Jessica Dunn scored three goals, including two in the first three-minute overtime period, to lead No. 18 UC Davis to a 8-6 win over Long Beach State in a Big West Conference women's water polo game at Campus Pool Saturday.
The Aggies improve to 15-13 for the year and 1-1 in conference contests. The 49ers slip to 7-17 overall and remain winless at 0-3 in Big West play.
Dunn assembled a strong all-around game, adding two assists, two drawn kickouts and three steals to her game-high scoring. Junior Rachelle Smith added two goals, while Carey Faber, Carmen Eggert and Kaylee Miller each scored one.
Chelsea Grabowski led LBSU with two goals, scoring her second with just eight seconds left in regulation to force the overtime. The 49ers had taken a quick lead on Krizia Cerda's goal just a minute into the contest, but Faber equalized at the end of the first quarter. The two teams also battled to a 3-3 tie at halftime, then the Aggies held a 5-4 lead through three quarters.
Dunn scored both of her goals in the first overtime period to send UC Davis to the lead, then the Aggies shifted to a ball-control mode for the remaining three minutes of extra play in sealing their win.
Senior goalkeeper Casey Hines tallied 10 saves in front of the UC Davis cage. Already the school's single-game and career record-holder, Hines lifts her 2010 total to 205, making her the first Aggie to post two 200-save seasons.
UC Davis returns to action with a Big West road game at UC Irvine at noon on Sunday.
