No. 2 Stanford Defeats Aggies In Shootout Finale

March 7, 2010

DAVIS, Calif. -

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

Senior driver Kelly Eaton scored a game-high four goals to lead No. 2 ranked Stanford to an 11-1 win over 15th-ranked host UC Davis in the final game of the 30th Aggie Shootout women's water polo tournament at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday. The Cardinal also captured a 17-1 win over Cal State Bakersfield in Day 2's previous action.

UC Davis, hosting its first home weekend of the year, dips to 9-10 for the season.

Senior Dana Nelsen scored the Aggies' only goal, punching in a shot from two-meters at the 6:23 mark in the game to tie the score at 1-1. However, Stanford sophomore Melissa Seidemann completed a 6-on-4 situation two minutes later, igniting the run of 10 unansered for the remainder of the contest.

UC Davis had its best opportunity to close the gap in the second quarter. Trailing 4-1 after the first eight minutes, the Aggies missed on a pair of 6-on-5 shots with less than five minutes remaining. Defensively, UC Davis held the Cardinal scoreless on five shots until Kelsey Holshouser sent a ball through two defenders and into the back at the net with less than a second on the game clock. Stanford led 5-1 at the break.

Eaton scored two goals in the third to stretch the Cardinal lead to 9-1, first netting a backhand shot at the 3:57 mark then converting a five-meter penalty shot with 2:26 to go. In all, Stanford shot 11-for-28 with five goals in transition, while UC Davis managed just 1-for-20 in the game.

Earlier in the day, Eaton and freshman Vee Dunlevie posted hat tricks in a 17-1 victory against Cal State Bakersfield. A total of 10 Cardinal players spread the scoring throughout the game, as Stanford led 4-0 after a quarter and 9-0 at the halftime intermission.

Nelsen and freshman Carly Ternasky each had two steals, and sophomore Christina Miyabe drew a pair of exclusions to highlight UC Davis defensively.

The Aggies return to action on Monday, March 15 for a tripleheader with Harvard and Fresno Pacific.
