Wright Wins 300th In Sunday Sweep

March 28, 2010

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Freshman Carly Ternasky scored a career-high five goals in a 14-4 win over Cal State San Bernardino then added two more in a 10-6 victory over Brown, helping UC Davis head coach Jamey Wright post his 299th and 300th career varsity wins at the Roadrunner Invitational women's water polo tournament at Cal State Bakersfield's Hillman Aquatics Center Sunday.

The 15th-ranked Aggies improve to 14-12 after the Day 2 sweep.

Wright, now in his 28th year at UC Davis between the club and varsity eras of the women's water polo program, entered the 2010 season with a 286-162 ledger. He has posted 20 or more wins in 12 of his 13 seasons at the helm since the sport achieved varsity status in 1996-97. More recently, Wright was selected as one of six 2010 inductees into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.

Ternasky was one of seven Aggie scorers in the morning win over San Bernardino. Senior Dana Nelsen added three, while sophomore Ariel Feeney netted two more. Ternasky hit a 6-on-5 goal with three minutes remaining in the first quarter, then tacked on her second goal in the period's final minute, boosting UC Davis to a 5-0 edge. Coyote sophomore Emily Hove fired in the lone goal of the second period to cut the Aggies' lead to 5-1 at the break, but Nelsen score two of her team's five third-quarter goals to stretch the tally to 10-3. Ternasky then hit three unanswered -- two on five-meter penalties -- to bring her total to five goals.

In the 10-6 win over Brown, Ternasky, sophomore Carey Faber and junior Rachelle Smith tallied two goals each to pull away from a 3-3 tie in the second quarter. Sophomore Kaylee Miller converted a power play with 3:53 left in the first half to give UC Davis the lead for good, while Smith bookended the second period with goals at the 6:34 and 2:33 marks.

Junior center Joanna Wohlmuth completed a 6-on-5 chance to help the Bears cut the Aggie lead to a single goal early in the third period, but Ternasky and fellow freshman Carmen Eggert notched goals to lift UC Davis back up to a 7-4 margin with a minute to go in that frame. Ternasky, Faber and freshman Jessica Dunn all had goals in the fourth to help Coach Wright hit his milestone win.

Senior Casey Hines recorded 15 saves in the win over the Bears, her highest total since her school-record 20 blocks against Maryland on February 6.

UC Davis begins the Big West Conference portion of its schedule on Saturday in a road tilt at Pacific.
