BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Freshman Jessica Dunn and sophomore Carey Faber each combined for five goals but 15th-ranked UC Davis lost a pair of game by 10-9 finals in the Roadrunner Invitational women's water polo tournament at Hillman Aquatics Center Saturday. The Aggies lost to host Cal State Bakersfield in the afternoon game, then fell to UC San Diego in the evening finale.
UC Davis evens its record at 12-12.
The Aggies and Tritons matched goal-for-goal for three quarters, with neither team building more than a one-goal lead. Faber completed a hat trick with 3:09 remaining in the second period. The two teams were tied 5-5 at halftime and 8-8 through three quarters, then Triton Stephanie Heinrich hit a goal in the opening minutes of the fourth to push her team up to a 9-8 edge. Felicia Orozco converted a 6-on-5 opportunity with 2:10 left to give UCSD a two-goal lead, then Dunn immediate answered with her second goal of the game to cut the deficit back to one. he Aggies had an extra-player advantage with 1:19 left in the game but could not capitalize.
UC Davis senior Casey Hines tallied nine saves in the cage while her counterpart, Markayla Quane, picked up 12 blocks in the Triton net.
In Saturday's afternoon action, Dunn scored three goals -- including two in the Aggies' fourth-quarter comeback -- in the 10-9 loss to the host 'Runners. Cal State Bakersfield converted each of its four 6-on-5 opportunities in the first half to craft a 7-4 lead, then C.J. Longueay and Sam Shead hit even-strength goals in the third period to send the Roadrunner lead to 9-5.
Aggie sophomore Carey Faber tallied a goal two minutes into the fourth period to trim the CSUB lead to three, then Roadrunner Alyson Moss hit a five-meter penalty shot to put the tally at 10-6. Dunn netted two goals and UC Davis sophomore defender Kaylee Miller hit another to cut the deficit to a single goal. The Aggies had a 6-on-5 chance in the final 11 seconds, but were unable to force overtime.
Saturday's losses to Cal State Bakersfield and UC San Diego marks the first time UC Davis has lost to a lower-ranked opponent.
