FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Rachelle Smith scored three goals, while two other Aggies tallied two goals each, leading 15th-ranked UC Davis to a 12-4 win over Fresno Pacific in a non-conference women's water polo game played at Sunnyside High School Friday evening.
The Aggies improve to 12-10 for the season.
Sophomore lefty Carey Faber and juniors Michelle Hook and Lauren Seidemann tallied two goals each for UC Davis, while Ariel Feeney, Carly Ternasky and Lyndsay Sutterley added one goal apiece. Sutterley also had four steals to aid the Aggies defensively.
Senior Casey Hines stopped four shots against two goals in her two quarters in the cage. Cara Schoeman took over goalkeeping chores in the third period, posting four saves against two goals, then freshman Riane Woods had two saves in the scoreless fourth.
Individual FPU scoring and save totals were not available.
Faber and Smith each scored twice in a six-goal first quarter. Faber netted her first goal in the first 18 minutes of play, then had her second as part of the Aggies' 4-0 start. UC Davis led 7-2 at the halftime break, then Smith completed her hat trick in the third, after which her team held a 10-4 lead.
Friday's win brings UC Davis head coach Jamey Wright's varsity-era win total to 298. Wright was recently named as one of six new inductees into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.
The Aggies return to action at the Roadrunner Invitational at Cal State Bakersfield, taking on the tournament hosts at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
