No. 15 UC Davis Claims Wins Over Harvard, FPU

March 15, 2010

DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore lefty Carey Faber scored three goals to lead 15th-ranked UC Davis to a 12-4 win over Harvard, then Lyndsay Sutterley and Jessica Dunn each tallied two scores in a 12-1 victory against Fresno Pacific during a collegiate women's water polo tripleheader on Monday. In neutral-site action, the Crimson posted a 7-4 triumph over the Sunbirds to start the day.

The Aggies improve to 11-10 for the season.

Freshman Carly Ternasky had two goals in support of Faber against Harvard, while seven other UC Davis players each picked up a goal. Junior Cara Schoeman amassed 11 saves in slightly more than four quarters in front of the Aggie cage. She had five stops in 11 minutes against the Crimson, then added six more in her first career start versus FPU.

As a team, UC Davis shot 8-for-16 in the first half against Harvard. Ternasky took an assist from sophomore Ariel Feeney to crack open the scoring outburst with 3:56 in the first, then converted a Dunn-drawn 6-on-5 opportunity early in the second. Faber hit a pair of extra-player attempts in the second frame to help the Aggies build an 8-0 halftime lead, then completed her hat trick on a pass from Katie Schlueter with less than three minutes left in the third.

Harvard was held scoreless until two minutes after the break, when Ita Barton-Kettleborough netted a 6-on-5 goal to bring the score to 8-1. The sophomore hole setter notched the only goal in the fourth, hitting an outside shot with under a minute left in the game.

The Aggies suffered from a relatively slow start in their nightcap against the Sunbirds, shooting just 4-for-17 before the break to hold a 4-1 edge through the first 16 minutes. But sophomore Christina Miyabe, who scored on a counterattack in the final second before halftime, assisted on two of the six UC Davis goals in the third period.

Both Dunn and Sutterley scored their respective second goals on counterattacks in that third period. Dunn collected Kaylee Miller's outlet pass near the right post in front of the FPU cage with 1:22 to go. Sutterley finished an Aggie transition play with less than a second left in that frame, pushing the UC Davis lead to 10-1.

Defensively, freshman Kathryn Bailey recorded four steals in roughly 13 minutes of tank time during the two games. Miyabe had two steals and four drawn kickouts to supplement her three assists for the day.

After completing the university's final examinations week, UC Davis returns to action for a road game at Fresno Pacific on March 26.
