LA JOLLA, Calif. - Freshman Carly Ternasky and senior Dana Nelsen each totalled four goals as 15th-ranked UC Davis split games on the first day of the Triton Invitational women's water polo tournament at Canyonview Aquatic Center Saturday. The Aggies defeated 20th-ranked Maryland, 10-5, then lost to No. 10 Loyola Marymount by a 16-8 final.
UC Davis is now 2-4 for the season.
Ternasky scored all four goals of her goals in the morning win over the Terrapins, while Nelsen and junior Michelle Hook each had three scores in the game. Ternasky converted a 6-on-5 chance with 1:42 remaining in the first, then added an even-strength goal less than 30 seconds later to erase an early 3-1 Maryland lead. She completed her hat trick in the second quarter to help the Aggies to a 6-4 halftime edge.
Nelsen tallied a goal on UC Davis' first possession after the break, then Hook scored on an extra-player situation with 4:20 on the third to put the Aggies up by five.
UC Davis battled closely with former conference rival LMU for the first half of play, trailing 6-5 at the halftime intermission. However, the Lions exploded for six goals in the third -- including two each by freshman Erin Manke and sophomore Kimberly Benedetti -- to pull away to the victory.
Sophomores Christina Miyabe and Ariel Feeney each had two goals to lead the Aggies against LMU. Nelsen, freshman Jessica Dunn, and sophomores Kaylee Miller and Carey Faber each added one to make up the balance of UC Davis' goals.
The Aggies continue action at the Triton Invite on Sunday morning against either UC Irvine or UC Santa Barbara.
