LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior outside hitter Caitlin Ledoux hit 13 kills with no errors while freshman middle blocker Haleigh Hampton added 10-2-15 hitting, helping Long Beach State to a 25-13, 25-19, 25-13 sweep over UC Davis in Big West Conference women's volleyball action at Walter Pyramid Friday evening.
The Aggies snap a seven-match win streak, falling to 12-5 for the year and 4-1 in conference matches. The 49ers improve to 12-5 overall, evening their Big West mark at 2-2.
Senior Melanie Adams led UC Davis offensively with 11 kills and a .375 hitting average, but the Aggies struggled to a team efficiency rate of .079. In contrast, Long Beach State batted .457 as a team, with Ledoux, Hampton, junior middle Michelle Osunbur and freshman outside hitter Delainey Aigner-Swesey all performing at .400 or better.
Long Beach State hit at a blistering .556 clip to claim a 25-13 win in the opening set. Ledoux registered three kills and Osunbur added two more to help the 49ers rattle off eight straight points to an 18-10 lead. The Aggies never challenged after that point, falling behind 1-0 in the match.
Ledoux struck again in the second set, scoring four kills and a solo stuff to boost LBSU to an 9-3 start. UC Davis managed to battle back to a three-point deficit, with Adams and middle blocker Betsy Sedlak each tallying a kill and block assist to cut the 49er lead to 18-15. Sophomore defensive specialist later served up an ace to bring the LBSU lead to just 20-18, but freshman Haleigh Hampton delivered a solo block and kill down the stretch to complete the win.
The 49ers completed the sweep in dominating fashion, never trailing in a 25-13 third-set victory. Osunbur supplied a kill and block assist to help LBSU score six of seven late in the frame, building a 22-10 lead. She then teamed with Janisa Johnson for the first of back-to-back blocks - part of nine total by the 49ers - to provide her team with match point. Sedlak knocked down a free ball and freshman setter Jenny Woolway served up an ace to hold off the LBSU victory for two points, but Hampton converted the side out to complete the sweep.
Long Beach State appears among the teams receiving votes in the October 4 AVCA Top 25 Coaches' poll. The 49ers had climbed as high as No. 21 before dipping out of the rankings.
UC Davis returns to action on Saturday in a road match at Cal State Fullerton.
