BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior center Dana Nelsen scored a total of three goals to lead UC Davis scorers as the 14th-ranked Aggies lost both of their games on the second day of the NorCal Invitational women's water polo tournament Sunday at California's Spieker Aquatic Center. UC Davis lost to No. 8 San Jose State, 6-3, then fell to No. 3 Hawai'i by a 17-4 final.
The Aggies open the season with a 1-3 record.
Nelsen scored two goals in the nightcap with the Rainbow Wahine and one in the opener against the Spartans. Sophomore Kaylee Miller added two goals against UH. Freshmen Jessica Dunn and Carly Ternasky, the latter of whom was UC Davis' top scorer in Saturday's tournament action, each added one goals in the SJSU game. Senior Casey Hines tallied 11 saves for the day.
The Aggies trailed by a 4-1 halftime deficit in the loss to the Spartans, then managed to trim the margin to 5-3 through three quarters. However, UC Davis was unable to add to the scoring tally during the fourth quarter, in an offensive drought that lasted well into the loss to Hawai'i.
Both SJSU and Hawai'i went 4-0 in the NorCal Invite. Ryan Hansen-Swaner paced the Rainbow Wahine with four goals against UC Davis, while utility Janessa Schmidbauer was San Jose State's leading scorer in the morning game with her two strikes.
The Aggies return to action on February 6-7 in the second of four straight road tournaments, this time at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational.
